2020 Pumpkin Pet Insurance Review • Pros, Cons & More • Benzinga

We think of pets as our family, so why not get them the best pet insurance coverage? Here’s what you need to know about a newcomer to the pet insurance game — Pumpkin Pet Insurance.

Pumpkin’s policies cover a wide range of situations that can result in costly vet bills. When looking at any insurance policy, it’s important to understand exactly what is covered before purchasing.

From the Pumpkin.com website for dogs:

dog insurance
cat insurance

And for cats:

Your best bet is to get a sample quote, where you can find exclusions clearly laid out in bullets.

Here’s a great example from their online quoting tool with a $10,000 annual limit for dogs, $7,000 annual limit for cats, $250 deductible and 90% reimbursement accident and illness plan in the ZIP code 48228:

Pet Age Payment per month
Golden retriever puppy 8 weeks to 6 months $60.85
German Shepherd puppy 8 weeks to 6 months $51.49
Golden retriever 6 years  $86.93
German Shepherd 6 years $73.55
Bengal kitten 8 weeks to 6 months $15.95
Bengal cat 6 years $21.27
Maine coon 3 years 19.50

Pet insurance claims handle differently than human health insurance. Most veterinarians require you to pay for your pet’s costs at the time of service, even if you have pet insurance. You then need to submit a claim to your pet insurance company if you believe that some or all of the costs of your vet visit should be covered. In some cases, your veterinarian may be able to submit a claim on your behalf and Pumpkin can pay your vet directly.

Pumpkin allows customers to submit a claim online or it can provide a claims form if requested. After you’ve submitted your claim, Pumpkin will review the claim and determine whether it can be covered. If it is, you’ll receive reimbursement for the covered costs on your claim after you have met your annual deductible.

Pumpkin’s website also claims that it will offer a chat feature soon.

Pumpkin offers robust pet insurance plans for dogs and cats of all ages and sizes. If you’re considering Pumpkin as your pet insurance provider, keep in mind the annual coverage limits and reimbursement limits in its policies. Even though it has some limitations, Pumpkin is a good option for most pet families.
