BROOKFIELD, WI – A grade 8 student from Brookfield will be working this school year to educate her peers on issues that concern them through the Scholastic’s Kids Press program.
The student, Emilia Sato, was chosen this year as “Kid Reporter”, a cohort of students aged 10 to 14 who produce “news for children, by children,” according to a statement from Scholastic.
Scholastic said Sato will interview reporters in his community on topics such as the 2020 election and other issues that matter to students today. Her stories, along with those of other children’s reporters, will be published on the Scholastic Kids Press website and in select issues of Scholastic Classroom Magazines.
Former Kid Reporters interviewed subjects like environmentalist Jane Goodall, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, award-winning author Jason Reynolds and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and the Presidents of the States- United Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump.
Suzanne McCabe, editor-in-chief of Scholastic Kids Press, said the program encourages students to think critically about issues in their communities.
“The kids have gone through monumental changes in their lives this year, prompting questions about health, science and racial justice,” McCabe said in a statement. “By writing about issues that concern them and contextualizing the news for their peers, our Kid Reporters help keep them informed and our young readers. By asking tough questions, they also identify leaders in their communities who have solutions.
