(Reuters) – Here are some of the quotes making the news during the first 2020 U.S. presidential debate on Tuesday between Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden ahead of the November 3 election:
Trump, asked if Justice Amy Coney Barrett should be appointed to the Supreme Court before the election: “We won the election. Elections have consequences.
“We have the Senate and we have the White House and we have a phenomenal candidate respected by all.
“… I think she (Barrett) will be exceptional. She will be as good as anyone who has ever sat on this tribunal. We won the election and therefore had the right to choose it.
Biden: “We should wait, we should wait and see what the outcome of this election will be.”
Pivoting towards the Affordable Care Act, Biden said, “I am not against justice. She seems to be a very good person. But she wrote … that she thinks the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional. The president has made it clear that he wants to get rid of the Affordable Care Act. He ran over it.
Trump intervened: “As for a say, the American people have already had their say. … I haven’t been elected for 3 and a half years. “
Biden replied: “He is elected until the next election. … The elections have already started.
Biden, said by Trump that he had adopted the “socialized medicine” proposals of former Democratic presidential rival Bernie Sanders: “Everyone here knows he’s a liar. … You picked the wrong guy on the wrong night at the wrong time.
“… Friends, do you have any idea what this clown is doing?” I’m telling you what, it is not for anyone who needs health care.
After Trump explained his health care proposal, Biden said, “He has no health care plan. … The point is, this man has no idea what he’s talking about.
THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
Biden to Trump: “You should get out of your bunker and out of the sand trap and … the golf course and go into the Oval Office and (rally) Democrats and Republicans, and fund what needs to be done now to save lives. “
Trump to Biden: “You didn’t think we should have closed our country (to China) because you thought it was terrible.”
“… We did a great job. But I’m telling you, Joe, you could never have done the job that we did. You don’t have it in your blood.
Trump on Biden’s proposed approach to developing coronavirus vaccines: “People like this would rather make it political than save lives.”
Biden: “Guess what, a lot of people are dead, and a lot more (will) die unless he gets a lot smarter a lot faster.”
Trump replied, “There is nothing smart about you, Joe.
Biden on Trump’s mask policy: “He’s crazy about it.”
Biden, speaking of Trump: “He’s a president who used everything like a dog whistle to try to generate racist hatred, racist division.”
Trump to Biden, citing Biden’s support for the 1994 Crime Bill: “You have treated the black community as badly as anyone in this country.”
Biden: “Yes, there is a systemic injustice in this country in education and work and in law enforcement, and the way it is enforced.”
LAW ENFORCEMENT AND URBAN RELIEF
Trump: “The top 10 cities and roughly the top 40 are run by Democrats in many cases, a radical left, and they’ve got you wrapped around their finger, Joe, to the point where you don’t want to say anything about it. law and order. And I’m going to tell you what the people of this country want and demand from law and order, and you’re even afraid to say it.
Biden said Trump had done nothing to calm the protests. “He’s just pouring gasoline on the fire.”
Responding to Trump attacking him in the suburbs, Biden said, “He wouldn’t know a suburb unless he took a wrong turn. I know the suburbs.
Trump to Biden: “Name a law enforcement group that has supported you. One. Think. We have the time.”
Biden: “Under this president, we have become weaker, sicker, more divided and more violent.”
Wallace: “Are you ready tonight to condemn the white supremacists and the militias and say that they must step back and not add to the violence or to the number of these towns as we saw in Kenosha, and as we saw it in Portland? “
Trump: “I would say almost everything I see is coming from the left wing, not the right. … I’m ready for everything. I want to see peace.
Wallace: “Then do it sir.”
Biden: “Do it, do it. Say it.”
Trump: “You want to call them. What do you want to call them? Give me a name. “
Biden, referring to a right-wing group: “Proud Boys”
Trump: “Proud Boys – take a step back and stay away.”
CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Trump: “I believe we have to do whatever we can to have clean air, clean water, and do whatever we can that’s good.”
Biden: “The first thing I will do, I will join the Paris Climate Agreement.”
Pressed by Wallace to explain the spending needed to fund the Green New Deal, Biden said, “The point is, it’s going to create millions of well-paying jobs.”
Trump, of Biden’s plan: “So why haven’t you done it for 47 years?”
Biden encouraged the postal vote, saying Trump is doing it too. “He’s sitting behind the Resolute desk (at the White House) and sending his ballot to Florida.”
Biden: “He can’t stop you from being able to determine the outcome of this election. … If I win, it will be accepted. If I lose, it will be accepted.
“If we get the votes, he will leave. He cannot stay in power.
Trump: “We may not know for months” who won.
Trump: “Don’t tell me about a free transition. It’s going to be a fraud like you’ve never seen it before. This is not going to end well.
Biden: “You will determine the outcome of this election. Vote, vote, vote. If you are able to vote early in your state, vote early. If you are able to vote in person, vote in person – however you prefer. Because he cannot prevent you from being able to determine the outcome of this election.
When asked if he would urge his supporters to remain calm and pledge not to declare victory until the election is certified, Trump said: “I urge my supporters to go to the ballot boxes and to be watched very carefully.
Trump: “If I see tens of thousands of manipulated ballots, I cannot accept it.
Biden: “The point is, I will accept it and so will he. You know why? Because once the winner is declared after all the ballots are counted, all the votes are counted. It will be the end, it will be the end.
At one point, while being interrupted by Trump, Biden said, ‘Do you want to shut up, man. It’s so non-presidential. … keep barking, man.
Wallace to Trump: “I think the country would be better served if we allowed the two people to speak with fewer interruptions. I ask you, sir, to do that.
Trump, referring to Biden, replied: “And so is he.”
Wallace: “Well, frankly, you made more interruption.”
