Gwinnett Co. Police K-9 officers train at Lake Lanier - CBS Atlanta

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga (CW69 News at 10) – Eleven K-9 police officers from Gwinnett County showed up for training this afternoon at Lake Lanier.

“We’re trying to do more advanced training and expose the dogs to helicopters, boats, advanced scenario-based training,” said Corporal Aaron Carlyle of the Gwinnett County Police Department.

This advanced training is done once a year and includes training dogs to catch decoys presented as suspects. K-9 officers are also helping locate missing people.

“We also train with our fire and rescue service on a regular basis with ladder trucks, where we might have a suspect on a roof,” Carlyle said.

Officers say the K9s think boat rides are fun and fun, but they train for serious missions. “We make it fun for the dog, so the dog wants to go ahead and do that type of training, and then when the deployments come in the dog sees it and knows, ‘Hey, I’ve seen that, I saw this photo from the site, I am ready to do my job, ”Carlyle explained.

Like all police work, the K-9’s job comes with its risks, and some pay the ultimate sacrifice, like K9 Blue. He was killed in the line of duty earlier this month. It is a reality that dedicated managers face every day.

“They have to trust their training, trust their dog, and trust the dog will do the job that needs to be done,” Carlyle said.

Managers and their K-9s are willing to risk their lives to protect and serve.
