HBO Max Debuts Equal, Haute Dog and Stylish Trailers

HBO Max today revealed the trailers for the four-part docuseries Equal, competition series Haute Dog, and the series Stylish with Jenna Lyons. The streaming service also gave the green light to documentary series Not So Pretty.

Equal

Premiering on HBO Max on Thursday, October 22, Equal is an LGBTQ+ docuseries chronicling the untold events leading up to the Stonewall Uprising. Emmy, Tony and Grammy winner Billy Porter (Pose, American Horror Story: Apocalypse) will as narrator for Equal.

Porter joins the previously-announced talent, including Primetime Emmy winner Samira Wiley, Grammy nominee Cheyenne Jackson, SAG nominee Anthony Rapp, Primetime Emmy nominee Shannon Purser, Heather Matarazzo, Jamie Clayton, Isis King, Gale Harold, and more.

Equal will introduce viewers to a wide range of LGBTQ+ visionaries portrayed by the cast, many of whom identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. Each part offers a distinct and connected chapter within the historical timeline. Part one, “The Birth of a Movement,” explores the rise of early organizations, The Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis in Los Angeles and San Francisco, respectively.

Part two, “Transgender Pioneers,” chronicles the 20th century trans experience, bookended by the 1966 Compton Cafeteria riots in San Francisco. Part three, “Black is Beautiful, Gay is Good!” examines the contributions from the Black community on the growing LGBTQ+ civil rights movement.

And part four, “Stonewall: From Rebellion to Liberation,” ties in the decades long struggles with the culminated Stonewall uprising – the beginning of the Pride movement.

Equal is executive produced and led by Scout Productions’ Emmy Award-winning team – Academy Award winner Michael Williams (The Fog of War), Joel Chiodi, David Collins (Queer Eye), and Rob Eric (Queer Eye) along with Emmy-nominated Berlanti Productions’ Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon, Arrow, Riverdale, The Flash) and Sarah Schechter (Supergirl, Riverdale), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory, The Normal Heart, The Boys in the Band) and Emmy nominee Todd Spiewak (Special, Young Sheldon, A Kid Like Jake) as well as Emmy nominee Eric Norsoph from That’s Wonderful Productions, Jon Jashni (Lost in Space) from Raintree Ventures, and Mike Darnell and Brooke Karzen, Warner Horizon Unscripted Television.

Diane Becker and Melanie Miller of Fishbowl Films serve as producers. Acclaimed filmmaker and producer Stephen Kijak (Sid & Judy) is the showrunner and director of episodes one, three and four alongside ground-breaking trans director Kimberly Reed (Prodigal Sons), who directs episode two.

Haute Dog

Launching on Thursday, September 24 on HBO Max is the dog grooming competition series Haute Dog. In the series, celebrity dog groomer Jess Rona leads the judges panel with Emmy nominee Robin Thede, with Matt Rogers serving up comedic commentary as the series host.

Each episode of Haute Dog features three dog groomers facing off over two rounds with the lucky groomer taking home Best in Show and walking away with $10,000 and a first place rosette. These doggy makeover wizards compete to turn the K-9s into K-10s. Stylish with Jenna Lyons

Eight-episode series Stylish with Jenna Lyons will premiere on the streaming service on November 26. As president of J. Crew, Jenna Lyons became the “woman who dresses America” – a formidable business and style icon.

Now, Jenna is experiencing a “rebirth.” She’s starting a new business in the home, beauty and fashion space aimed at helping people from all walks of life find their own style. With her reputation on the line, Jenna’s both thrilled and terrified.

A refreshing mix of elevated documentary and formatted competition, Stylish with Jenna Lyons follows Jenna as she tackles design projects that will help define her future business, from renovating her friend’s classic Brooklyn townhouse to hosting mobile fashion makeovers to designing her new office and launching LoveSeen, a new beauty brand with a fresh take on lashes. Along the way, she’ll test a diverse group of creative associates all vying for a life-changing position in Jenna’s growing team.

Jenna’s staff, including her chief-of-staff Kyle DeFord and stylist Sarah Clary, join her in this ambitious new venture, delivering a masterclass in taste, design and fashion in every episode. Stylish with Jenna Lyons is produced by Our House Media with OHM’s Simon Lloyd and Matt Hanna serving as executive producers, along with Lyons, David Tibballs, Paul Storck, Hillary Olson, Jae Goodman and Michael Bloom for Bongo Pictures.

Not So Pretty

And last but not least, HBO Max has greenlit Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s Jane Doe Films limited docuseries Not So Pretty, from studio Entertainment One (eOne). The four episode, half-hour investigation-driven project will bring awareness to the lurking dangers in the commodities we all use every day without question for makeup, skin-care, nails, and hair. Not So Pretty is currently in production.

Not So Pretty will mark the first-ever comprehensive large-scale investigative expose of the trillion-dollar cosmetics, beauty and personal care industry. Celebrated and groundbreaking filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering (On The Record, The Hunting Ground, The Invisible War) will take this monolithic industry to task via rigorous investigations, incisive wit and emotional storytelling to inform audiences of the hidden hazards of and safe, budget-friendly alternatives for their daily products.
