LOS ANGELES – “Schitt’s Creek,” Canada’s little show about a family of fish out of the water, made history at Sunday’s Emmy Awards with a sweep of comedy awards, something even the greats of the television like “Frasier” and “Modern Family” have failed to make achieve.

Zendaya, 24, became the youngest lead dramatic actress winner for her role as a troubled teenager in ‘Euphoria’.

“I know this seems like a really weird time to celebrate,” Zendaya said. “But I just want to say that there is hope in young people. I know our TV show doesn’t always seem to be a good example of this, ”but thanked the young people who“ get the job done ”.

“Succession,” a family power struggle over a media empire, was honored as Best Drama Series, and creator Jesse Armstrong took the opportunity to offer “thanks,” including to President Donald Trump for what Armstrong called the management of the pandemic “lousy.”

“Succession” star Jeremy Strong won the Theater Actor Trophy for his role as the aspiring heir.

The awards for Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek” included Best Comedy Series and trophies for its stars, including Catherine O’Hara and father-son Eugene and Daniel Levy.

“It’s absolutely amazing. I think my dad said it better earlier tonight – it’s a dream you don’t want to wake up to, to be honest. What an absolutely amazing way to end our series, ”said Daniel Levy backstage.

In his acceptance speech, he said the sitcom is about “the transformational effects of love and acceptance, and it’s something we need more than ever,” urging people to register and vote to achieve this goal.

Other winners, including “Watchmen” star Regina King, argued that the November 3 general election was near.

All of the winners accepted their rewards virtually at the pandemic security ceremony, including O’Hara, but she was not alone.

“Although these are the strangest days, may you have as much joy in being locked in a room or two with your family as I do with my dear Roses,” said O’Hara, surrounded in a room decorated with co – stars who play members of the Rose family.

Levy called it “ironic that the most direct role I’ve ever played gets me an Emmy for a comedy performance.” I have to seriously question what I have been doing ”for 50 years.

Moments later, her son won the Comedy Writing Award for the episode “Schitt’s Creek,” then shared a Directing Award and won the Supporting Actor Comedy Trophy. The Supporting Actress Trophy went to her co-star Annie Murphy.

Daniel Levy thanked his father and O’Hara for teaching an extended “master class” in comedy. The show’s sweep has come for its highly acclaimed final season.

References to the coronavirus were part of the ceremony, with essential workers – including a teacher and a UPS delivery man – presenting awards and Jason Sudeikis apparently undergoing a COVID-19 test on stage.

In a year with a record number of black nominees, 35, there was a noticeable lack of diversity at the start of the show. With “Schitt’s Creek” gobbling up comedy awards, it left “Insecure” and creator Issa Rae on Sunday empty-handed.

It was also the case of Ramy Youssef, creator and star of the semi-autbiographical comedy “Ramy”, on the love and the religious life of a young American Muslim. Yousef tweeted a video of someone wearing a Haz-Mat costume hugging an Emmy and saying goodbye after losing the Lost Comedy Actor category.

There was a sign of change with the theater awards, which came in the latter part of the ceremony.

The powerful ‘Watchmen’ series, a graphic novel adaptation steeped in racial pain, was voted Best Limited Series and King won the Lead Actress for her work on the HBO show. She was covered in confetti as she accepted into a chair, wearing a T-shirt that paid tribute to police shooting victim Breonna Taylor.

“It’s so weird and weird,” said King, who regained her composure and called on viewers to vote and, behind the scenes, explained why she was wearing the message shirt.

“The cops still haven’t been held accountable,” she said. “It barely represents decades, hundreds of years of violence against black bodies. Carrying the likeness of Breonna and portraying her and her family and the stories we were exploring, showcasing and holding a mirror on “Watchmen” we felt it appropriate to portray with Breonna Taylor.

Her co-star, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series. Uzo Aduba won the Counterpart Actress Award for her portrayal of Shirley Chisholm in “Mrs. America.”

Anthony Anderson, nominated for “black-ish”, took the stage to voice his disappointment vigorously, saying the awards should have been “Howard University homecoming Black”.

“It’s not what it should have been. … But the stories of Black, the performances of Black and Black Lives Matter, ”he says, urging host Jimmy Kimmel to scream with him.

Tyler Perry, actor turned media mogul, accepted the Governor’s Award.

Supporting theater awards were presented to Billy Crudup for “The Morning Show” and to Julia Garner, the repeat winner, for “Ozark”.

“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” was once again honored as Best Variety Talk Series, with David Letterman announcing the award after being dumped on the side of the road by an annoyed ride-hailing driver.

Oliver joined the ranks of the winners calling on Americans to vote, as did Mark Ruffalo, who won the limited-series acting trophy for “I Know This Much is True”

Kimmel opened the show with a monologue that seemed to be delivered defiantly in front of a crowded and enthusiastic theater – until it was revealed that these were clips from previous Emmy shows.

“Of course, I’m here on my own. Of course, we don’t have a hearing, ”he said. “This is not a MAGA rally. These are the Emmys.

With over 100 long distance video streams with nominees in front, “what could possibly be going on?”

A minor blunder ruined Saturday’s Virtual Emmys for technical and other honors, when Jason Bateman’s name was announced for a guest actor award that belonged to Ron Cephas Jones of “This Is Us.” Other guest acting honors included Eddie Murphy and Maya Rudolph for “Saturday Night Live” and Cherry Jones for “Succession.”

Bateman was one of the few people in attendance at Staples Center for Sunday’s show, sitting in the audience during Kimmel’s opening monologue. Bateman sat facing the stone in the middle of a collection of cardboard cutouts, exchanging jokes with Kimmel after the host indicated he was there.
