Garda advice for dog owners

SIT UP and OBEY is what we teach our dogs. Now Laois gardaí is appealing to dog owners to do the same.

The force is asking dog owners across the county to obey dog ownership laws, which will help them find their pets if they are lost or stolen.

With a sharp increase in dog thefts this year, Laois-Offaly gardaí today issued advice on simple steps that will help find stolen animals.

The issue was also highlighted last night on RTÉ’s “Crimecall” TV show by Laois-Offaly crime prevention officer Sergeant Graham Kavanagh.

In addition to having dog licenses, all owners are legally required to microchip and register their dogs. It is a simple procedure but it can make a huge difference in locating lost or stolen animals.

Gardaí said: “The microchip and the registration establish a clear connection between a dog and its owner. Having a microchip means they can be reunited with their owner quickly, reducing stress for both dog and owner. “

In addition to vets, a growing number of local authorities and animal welfare groups are organizing microchips, so it’s an easy procedure to organize. It has been the law since 2016.
