To mark World Rabies Day yesterday (September 28), the Soi Dog Foundation organized a special sterilization and vaccination campaign for dogs and cats at the Pracha Udom Community Hall in Rassada.

A total of 53 animals were vaccinated and 34 sterilized by the Soi Dog mobile clinic team during the event. Their humanitarian education team was also on hand to educate pet owners and local feeders about the importance of annual vaccinations to protect animals against rabies and other infectious diseases.

“A lot of people still believe that vaccinations are not necessary for pets, but they are not,” said Nuttawut Kumngern, head of humanitarian education at Soi Dog. “There is always a risk of rabies for your pets because it can be transmitted between mammals; for example, by the bite of a mouse. There is also a risk if your pet escapes from your home.

“We want people to be aware of the importance of annual vaccinations, because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Nuttawut and his team also discussed how to prevent rabies in humans and how to administer first aid for a bite from a potentially rabid dog or cat.

Soi Dog’s intensive and continuous sterilization and vaccination program has proven to be the most effective method of reducing the transmission of diseases such as rabies as well as managing stray dog and cat populations.

Since 2003, more than 460,000 dogs and cats have been sterilized and vaccinated across Thailand through this program, known as CNVR (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return). CNVR has been instrumental in minimizing rabies outbreaks in the country, particularly in Phuket where the foundation is based, with only one case of rabies identified in a dog on the island in the past 25 years.

Soi Dog remains committed to the prevention and eventual elimination of rabies in Thailand and joins the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) to end human deaths from dog-transmitted rabies by 2030 , creating a better world for animals and humans.
