RIDGEWOOD, NJ – Somerville Elementary School has achieved Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification for 2020 and is one of 147 schools in the state to do so.
Ridgewood School received the bronze honor and is the only school in Bergen County to make the list.
“I am delighted that we have achieved the Sustainable School designation – Bronze Level,” said Dr. Lorna Oates-Santos, Principal of Somerville Elementary School.
“The team of teachers and parents who have worked hard to document the solid initiatives of Somerville School are committed to continuing to reflect on our practices and refine our work around how we educate all members. community about the impact we have on the health of the environment and the power we have to effect positive change around us. “
Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a voluntary certification program for Kindergarten to Grade 12 schools.
Each school certified at the Bronze level must submit documentation to show that it has completed a balanced portfolio of the program., reaching a minimum of 150 points.
This year, six schools obtained certification at the more advanced silver level, which requires a minimum of 350 points of sustainable development actions.
“We weren’t sure what to expect after this difficult year, but the response has been inspiring. We have seen an increase in the number of certified schools since last year,” said Randall Solomon, Executive Director of Sustainable Jersey .

Achieving the Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification is a significant achievement and these schools are paving the way for a more sustainable New Jersey, when we need it most. “
