Welcome to the inaugural edition of The Norwich Times! We hope you enjoy the mix of news, columns and articles that we have included in this brand new journal, but most of all we hope you will help make it even better over the weeks as we know your voice that’s what The Norwich Times needs most.

So we’ve made it easy for you to contribute stories, columns, short stories and even poems and photos by sending submissions to Because, as they say, “the best news we get is from you!”

We would also like you to take advantage of our new website,, where you will find all the stories you see here and more. Please feel free to visit the website to send friends who do not receive the paper links to all of our great stories. We know that many people of Norwegian descent would love to read about the people they still care about.

We are planning several regular features, including Kindness in Real Life, where we urge readers to send us stories about people doing a good job in the community. Another regular feature of ours, Be An Angel, is for people who seek help from the community, whether it’s a medical device or a kidney.

Our Friends and Neighbors feature is where we rely on you to send us stories of accomplishments and milestones, whether it’s a promotion or a retreat. The immensely popular My Pet Pal feature gives us humans a chance to brag about our dogs, cats, iguanas or any other furry or feathered friend who feels like family (we serve as a family pet). Norwich for our inaugural issue). We hope you’ll also like occasional articles like In Galleries highlighting local art shows and Out & About, where we ask readers and freelance writers to tell us about the fun places to visit.

And, of course, we would love for you to submit calendar or library listings by emailing The Norwich Times will also be your place for honor rolls, deans lists and other local school information (this week the Norwich Free Academy sent us plenty of news).

Plus, we’ll share some great writers with you, like Glenn Alan Cheney from Hanover, who writes the column called What The …, and acclaimed local author Ruth Crocker, who shares her unique take on the world. in his column Writing on Water. Other columnists weigh in on relationships, history, wildlife, food, and more so we hope you read and enjoy!

It’s a unique privilege to premiere a new newspaper amid a pandemic and a time of social change and political controversy, but we promise not to be depressed. We won’t hesitate to bring up controversial topics, but we will try to be optimistic and offer thoughtful commentary rather than searing attacks at a time when most of us are tired of yelling and compliments on TV.

Above all, we look forward to bringing you interesting stories about the people of Norwich, Sprague, Griswold and other towns and villages in the region. Do you have an idea for a story? Please feel free to write to me at or call my cell at 860-964-0597. Please feel free to contact my associate editor Amanda Hutchinson at for advice on calendar items, photographs, and memoirs.

We’re excited about The Norwich Times, but we need your help to make it the best it can be!

Lee Howard is editor of the Norwich Times and eight other Times newspapers serving eastern Connecticut.
