Dear Val,

We had a terrible accident at home with a guest’s dog. My aunt was visiting and I explained to her that she should keep her dogs separate from mine until we can properly present them. I heard screaming in the backyard only to find my aunt had let her little dog run loose in my dog’s playground and my wolf-hybrid dog had her dog by the neck. The injuries were significant, but the dog survived and was released with several stitches in her neck. My aunt is very unhappy with me right now and I try to explain to her that my dog is not a bad dog but that she has what is called natural prey and I asked that she keep her dog. I just feel horrible about it and it is important to me that my aunt does not view my dog as a cold blooded killer. Is there anything you can say as a professional that could help them understand how dogs think and act and that will help us try to live together cohesively for a while?

Dear responsible exotic animal owner,

Well this is a super unfortunate accident and I hope the Shi-Tzu has a full and speedy recovery.

It is also a multi-faceted situation with many areas that could be addressed in detail.

Wolves and hybrids as pets, integrating animals, assisting people in the process of learning animal behavior, managing safety to contain animals hunted by prey and more Let’s focus on your main concern, which is the makes you don’t want your aunt to think your hybrid wolf is a monster.

I approached it in letter form and I will apply it here.

I’m so sorry to hear that this has happened to your little dog.

Some people routinely believe that all pets should be able to get along in casual everyday conditions and this is not always the case.

Many people choose to live with exotic animals that require more specialized care and management. And it’s okay. And for the most part, the people who own animals understand the potential of animal behaviors and manage them properly to ensure the safety of all other animals and people. Wolves, hybrids as well as domestic dogs can potentially harm another person or animal. It is up to the animal owner to make great efforts to socialize and display these animals to the best of the ability of the keepers. It is also important to provide education to others, appropriate fences, housing, signs and safety measures to protect people and animals from possible innate and instinctive behaviors of animals. One of these behaviors is called a prey drive or a predator drive. The instinct to hunt and capture prey is more like what happened here. This drive is not only found in wild animals, but also in many of the pets that we share our homes and live with.

I believe your niece has gone to great lengths to socialize and manage her wolf hybrid. She has proven that he can live well with several other dogs in the same household and she hopes that through this small information article you will have a better understanding and eventually learn to love and / or respect her animal. I understand that there have been new fences and management tools that have been put in place and that a watchful eye will always be offered towards any animals that cohabit here at all times. On that note, please stay safe and be aware of your surroundings with your dog. I send all the best wishes for a speedy recovery to your beloved pet and peace to all creatures that roam this earth.
